DAILY CHEWING STICK: 14TH JULY, 2015.
(Exodus 2:1-15, Mtt 11:20-24).
Reflecting on the Gospel passage of today reminds me of this popular dictum: TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH MORE IS EXPECTED.
Perhaps that is why ordinarily, one would expect for example that: PASTOR’S CHILDREN SHOULD BE VERY HOLY, DOCTOR’S CHILDREN VERY HEALTHY, TEACHER’S CHILDREN VERY INTELLIGENT, TAILOR’S CHILDREN WEAR THE BEST OF CLOTHES, SHOEMAKER’S CHILDREN WEAR THE BEST OF SHOES, MUSICIAN’S CHILDREN LOVE MUSIC AND BE THE BEST DANCERS, LAWYER’S CHILDREN BE THE MOST LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS, TO MENTION BUT A FEW. If this happens, it will make real the saying, LIKE FATHER LIKE SON OR LIKE MOTHER LIKE DAUGHTER. But if on the contrary, people do not behave as expected above, one is simply DISAPPOINTED.
Brethren, Jesus expressed His disappointment today on the people of CHORAZIN, BETHSAIDA AND CAPERNAUM on their lack of faith. He spent so much time and energy preaching and performing miracles in these towns. He showed them His love and compassion by the many healings he worked, but it was a case of POURING WATER IN A BASKET.
It was at Bethsaida He cured a blind man (cf Mk 8:22-26). The four Gospels have the multiplication of five loaves and two fish done in Bethsaida (cf Mt 14:13-21, Mk 6:30-44, Lk 9:12-17; Jn 6:1-13). The Centurion’s Servant was cured in Capernaum (Mt 8:5-13), healing of Peter’s Mother-in-law (cf Mk 1:29-31), raising of Jairus’ daughter to life (Mk 5:21-43), the woman with the issue of blood (Mk 5:25-34), etc!
Beloved in Christ, with all these and many more not written here, SO MUCH FAITH AND HOLINESS WAS EXPECTED. This made Jesus to say: HAD THE CITIES OF TYRE AND SIDON ENJOYED SUCH PRIVILEGES AS CITIES OF CHORAZIN, BETHSAIDA AND CAPERNAUM, THEY WOULD HAVE REPENTED LONG AGO IN SACKCLOTH AND ASHES (Mt 11:21).
Brethren, have we also not been so much privileged and favoured by God? WHAT IS OUR RESPONSE?
Many years ago, you could find JUST ONE CHURCH in a whole community, yet people made efforts and even trekked to attend Mass and Church programmes. But today, CHURCHES ABOUND, EVEN OUT-STATIONS very close to our homes, yet, many do not attend. Again, before PRIESTS were few and people struggled and even lined up for reception of SACRAMENTS (especially Confession). But today, some Parishes have three priests and even beg people to come for confession.
Beloved, let us ask ourselves today, with all these gifts, talents, good health, etc; WILL GOD BE DISAPPOINTED WITH US AT THE END OR HE WILL SAY: WELL DONE, GOOD AND TRUSTWORTHY SERVANT, ENTER YOUR MASTER’S ABODE?
Good morning and God bless!
Journey Mercies to all travellers today!!!
